Who would have thought there would be a tornado in Metro Manila....ever?
A small tornado ravaged parts of Quezon City today. The tornado, locally called ‘buhawi’, caused damage to property in the areas of Kamuning, Tomas Morato and New Manila. Trees were uprooted, roofs blown away and other structures were damaged as the small tornado was felt around noon. Damage was also reported in the areas of Kamias and Balete Drive.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has been alerted on the incident and coordinating with city officials in the clean up of debris blocking roads. With the rains brought by tropical storm Falcon continuing to pour, resident are advised to stays indoors and venture outside only if necessary.
The Quezon City Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) said roofs of houses lay sprawling in the residential area near Judge Damian Jimenez St. corner Eulogio Rodriguez Sr. Ave. following passage of the tornado, or ‘buhawi’. No injuries have been reported so far.
Social media became the venue of news about the tornado. Users of Twitter and Facebook took to their accounts to post pictures and share their experience as the ‘buhawi’ passed over their area in Quezon City. One of the first to post to Twitter was recording artist Jimmy Bondoc: “Taga qc, tomas morato, kamuning area po kami. Dito po dumaan ang buhawi. Everyone, be safe. And check your rooftops, windows, etc for loose debris.”
“Tornado hit between 1200-1230pm. Dad’s roof is gone and it left a big hole in his ceiling and walls. Good thing nobody got hurt,” added user sarah_nocon. Meanwhile, Facebook user, Gilda Abat said: “wow! a whirlwind passed by our FORAB building, blew the tables in the roofdeck to the 2nd floor through the fire exit, and broke glass walls and windows. scary moment. good thing nobody was hurt. thank you, Lord.”
