If you’ve ever wanted to go scuba diving, take a look at this video from shallow water dives along the Verde Island Passage, the “center of the center” of marine biodiversity in the Philippines. Between April 26 and June 10, 2011, scientists participated in the largest expedition undertaken by the California Academy of Sciences — The 2011 Philippine Biodiversity Expedition — to survey all types of aquatic and terrestrial habitats in this island nation.

The video shows Academy scientists along with colleagues from the University of Philippines Manila and the Museum of Natural History as they look for new life and document the biodiversity in more than 30 shallow water sites. There are more species of soft corals at just one dive site in the expedition area than there are in all of the Caribbean.
